About Denise

Speaking 2As founder of essentials! the professional development company, Denise Marcia has more than 25 years in the hospitality, corporate, and entertainment industries. She is a certified etiquette expert and stresses the advantage that social skills have in achieving and excelling at professional goals.

Denise holds a Fine Arts degree in drama from Howard University in Washington, DC. She pursued her craft in Hollywood, CA and became an accomplished professional actress in television and theatre in the late 70s and 80s, even co-starring in an ABC sit-com, and an ensemble cast of a Tony-award winning production.

Although show business was not fulfilling enough, Denise remained in the creative field as a Gospel music executive, promoting and marketing established artists and developing new performers. While upholding her responsibilities in that industry, she noticed one regrettable hindrance to singers’ success was due partially to the lack of soft skills.

Beyond her etiquette certification, Denise completed an extensive study of social and business etiquette; its positive and negative effects on self-esteem and correlation to career advancement. She found that understanding protocol and courtesies greatly increases personal and professional effectiveness is often the catalyst that propels one to achieving vocational objectives and, increases company profitability as well as personal marketability.

SpeakingHer book of ‘quick notes’ called, Handle Your Business! offers college students a handy refresher on the rules of etiquette in business and social situations. Educators have seen the immediate and positive impact of these skills in the lives of the young people with whom Denise has shared.

She has written business etiquette columns for an online professional magazine, and a local bank’s weekly in-house newsletter receiving positive feedback from readers.

Her love of young people and their career success moved Denise to create a workshop for teens this summer called, “Get the Job, Keep the Job.” Conducted in the executive boardroom of a corporate office, she kept it real by bringing in hiring managers to interview the young people for summer jobs after the four-hour etiquette session.

Denise is currently the Etiquette Coach for “The Morning Show with Doug and Jaci” on 94FM-The Fish, a syndicated radio show that serves 80 stations nationally and internationally. Her family-friendly tips that have aired can also be heard on the station’s website.

Denise has been invited to work with the staffs of the Department of Revenue in Nashville, Caterpillar Financial, Avenue Bank, Synergy Business Environments, International Association of Administrative Professionals, Nashville Association of Sales Professionals, Nashville Career Advancement Center, Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, the NAACP organization, YCAP/YMCA, and the Metro Nashville Public Schools.

The essentials! list of colleges and organizations include: The Honors Programs at Tennessee State University, Hampton University, Virginia State University, Florida Memorial University, North Carolina A&T State University, South Carolina State University, Bowie State University, Fayetteville State University, and both regional and national Honors conferences.

Denise Marcia has also been well received at Delaware State University, Kentucky State University, University of Arkansas, Virginia Tech, Fisk University and Middle Tennessee State University.

For over 10 years Denise has been a speaker, presenter and host for the Emerging Leaders Workshop in Roanoke, VA; and for the last 15 years continues to conduct dining and business etiquette workshops annually for the Leadership for Queens and Kings Conference in New Orleans.
